Getting your first DJ gig has very little to do with luck and a lot to do with preparation, positioning, and persistence. The music industry is competitive, but it's also built on relationships. Understanding that early gives you a significant advantage over those who simply wait to be discovered.

Step 1: Get Your Basics Solid First

Before you approach any venue, you need to be genuinely ready to perform. That means:

  • Consistent beatmatching and smooth transitions
  • A clear understanding of phrase structure and energy management
  • A music library that's well-organised and tailored to your genre
  • The ability to read and respond to a room — even a small one

Record your practice sets. Listen back. If you'd be comfortable playing it publicly, you're ready to start pitching yourself.

Step 2: Define Your Sound and Niche

Generic DJs are hard to book. DJs with a clear identity are easier to pitch. Ask yourself: What genre do you specialise in? What kind of events would benefit from your sound? A DJ who plays soulful house at upscale cocktail bars is a completely different proposition to one who plays hard techno at underground warehouse parties.
